Eligibility: Typically, you are eligible to take Step 1 if you are enrolled in, or have completed, a medical degree program at a medical school recognized by the World Directory of Medical Schools. The eligibility criteria can vary, so it's important to check the specific requirements.
Content: The exam consists of multiple-choice questions and computer-based case simulations. The content is organized into several disciplines, including anatomy, behavioral sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology.
Format: USMLE Step 1 primarily consists of multiple-choice questions with a single best answer. The questions are divided into seven 60-minute blocks, each containing about 40 questions. There are also 45 minutes of break time during the test.
Scoring: The scoring system for USMLE Step 1 has undergone some changes in recent years. As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, Step 1 used a three-digit numeric score. Prometric Test Centers: USMLE Step 1 is administered at Prometric test centers. You can select a test center and date that's convenient for you.
Test Day: On the day of the exam, you should arrive at the test center early and be prepared to present proper identification. The exam is typically taken on a computer.
Results: You will receive your Step 1 score as a three-digit numerical score and a corresponding percentile. Results are usually available approximately three to four weeks after taking the exam.
